As with last year, Samsung is the first to announce a new mirrorless offering after the new year began. Today's update is the NX30, Samsung's DSLR-style mirrorless camera.
Based on many of the features and performance first seen in the NX300, the NX30 has a few interesting tricks up its sleeve. You can look at the data page for the full specifications, but here are a few that stood out to me:
- Uncompressed HDMI support — video on the HDMI port can be uncompressed 1080P/30.
- Tilting EVF — the EVF module tilts upwards as much as 80°. Coupled with the LCD which rotates side to side by 180° and tilts as much as 270°, there really shouldn't be an angle you can't get a view of your composition from.
- Direct Dropbox support — way to go Samsung! Finally someone trying to help with workflow. The NX30 can use its WiFi capability to automatically upload your images to your Dropbox account (not available in all countries, though). Additionally, direct Flickr support is also available in some regions. What's happening here? Exactly what I said I wanted to happen: the camera runs the Tizen OS and Samsung has worked with third parties to get apps installed on the camera out of the box. Let's hope that more apps are coming, as that would really up the ante on helping photographers get their images where they want them without having to make direct cable connections and manual processes.
Along with the NX30, Samsung had another tasty offering: a new 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS lens. The kit zoom with the NX30 is the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Power Zoom (only 4 ounces, or 111g), but the new fast S series lens is the one that's going to attract all the attention. Given the APS sensor of the Samsung NX models, 16-50mm is 24-75mm equivalent. With image stabilization. Why is it that the Canon and Nikon crop sensor DSLR lines don't offer anything equivalent?
I don't have a data page on the new lenses yet, as not enough details have been released. Likewise, prices and availability dates haven't been released, though Samsung will be showing the new products at CES next week.
