Nikon announced the Nikon 1 in September 2011 with two models, the entry J1 and the more sophisticated V1 model. Nikon expanded the line to four models (AW, J, S, and V) and updated some of those lines as many as four times.
- AW = underwater and shockproof models
- J = sophisticated compact camera like designs
- S = simple compact camera like designs
- V = sophisticated semi-DSLR designs
The Nikon 1 line was officially discontinued in 2018.
One of the unique aspects of the Nikon 1 cameras was that they were the earliest of the mirrorless cameras to feature phase detect autofocus and DSLR-like focus performance. They were also are unique in that they could shoot at up to 60 fps (20 fps with focus and exposure calculations).
